What affects the cost of a batch of 3D printed parts?

Print Foundry team Production guide

The weight of a part is only one part of its cost. A useful production quote accounts for the work needed to turn an approved design into a consistent, packed order.

Geometry and print time

Two objects with similar material weight can take very different amounts of time to print. Height, small features, orientation, wall design and supports affect the process. A design change may reduce work, but it should not compromise the function or appearance you need.

Material and preparation

Material selection influences machine setup, handling and the suitability of the result. File repair or design changes may also be required. These activities should be identified in the scope so you know which charges apply to preparation and which apply to the production run.

Quantity and production planning

A larger order can spread some preparation work across more pieces. It does not automatically make every design inexpensive or every deadline achievable. Ask for the quantities you are actually considering and discuss whether phased delivery would help.

Finishing and assembly

Support removal, sanding, painting, joining and other manual steps add labor. Specify which surfaces matter most and whether the product will be viewed close up. An agreed sample gives the production team a useful appearance reference.

Quality checks and packaging

Critical dimensions, fit checks, labels and individual packaging all affect the work required. Discuss them before the quote is finalized. Shipping also depends on packed dimensions, destination and the delivery approach, especially for large objects.

How to compare proposals

Check that suppliers are quoting the same design version, quantity, material, finish and delivery requirements. Look for the approval steps and what is excluded. A low unit price is difficult to evaluate if necessary finishing or packing is missing.
